Have you ever seen a pool table without pockets? This is not a mistake, it is a game called Carom. This fascinating cue sport is actually the original pool. It offers different variations which challenge even the most expert players. In this beginner-friendly guide, we’ll explore what Carom Billiards is, how it differs from pool, and how to play, plus answer some frequently asked questions.

What is Carom Billiards?

Carom Billiards, also called French Billiards, is played on a billiard table without pockets. There are three balls: a red object ball, a white cue ball, and a yellow cue ball. The goal is simple: score points by hitting the cue ball into the other two balls in a single shot, a move called a “carom.”

Carom Billiards originated in 18th-century France and remains popular in Europe and Asia. While it may seem less familiar than pool, it’s just as exciting—especially if you enjoy strategy and precision.

Differences Between Carom Billiards and Pool

Pool and Carom are both cue sports and considered under the billiards umbrella, but there are many differences. First, Carom is played on a billiards table without pockets. Pool is played on a billiards table with six pockets. Carom uses only three balls including the cue ball while traditional 8-ball pool uses sixteen. The goal of Carom billiards is to complete a carom by hitting both object balls, whereas the objective of Pool is to sink balls into pockets. Both games have different variations. Typical Carom variations include Three-Cushion Billiards, Balkline, and One Cushion. On a pool table, you can play games such as 8-ball, 9-ball, and One Pocket.

How to Play

The Setup:

Place the red ball on the foot spot, one cue ball on the head spot, and the other cue ball nearby. Players choose their cue ball (white or yellow).

The Objective:

Use the cue ball to hit both the other balls in one shot to score a point. In advanced versions, like Three-Cushion Billiards, the cue ball must rebound off three cushions before hitting the second ball.

Taking Turns:

Players alternate turns when a shot fails. A game typically continues until a player reaches a pre-set score, such as 50 points.

Rules to Remember:

Fouls, such as touching a ball accidentally, end your turn but don’t deduct points.
